Actress Hayden Panettiere has tragically died at the age of 36, her representative confirmed Sunday, August 16. The former child star, who rose to fame in Remember the Titans before becoming a household name through Heroes and Nashville, died in Greenville, South Carolina.
According to the Greenville Police Department, officers and EMS personnel responded at approximately 1:51 p.m. Sunday to a report of an “unresponsive female.” Panettiere was found unresponsive at the scene, where medical assistance, including advanced life support, was administered. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. local time. Police said the preliminary investigation has found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances, while the investigation remains ongoing.
Panettiere began working as a performer as a child and made an early impression in Remember the Titans, where she played Sheryl Yoast. She later appeared in films including Raising Helen, Ice Princess and Scream 4, but it was television that ultimately made her a star.
In 2006, Panettiere landed the role of Claire Bennet on NBC's hit superhero drama Heroes, famously playing the cheerleader with the ability to regenerate. She later starred as troubled country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville, earning two Golden Globe nominations for her performance. Her later credits included the Scream franchise, including Scream VI.
Panettiere had also become increasingly candid about the difficult experiences behind her public image. Earlier this year, she released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she opened up about postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse and the challenges that accompanied growing up in the spotlight.
Her death is the second devastating loss her immediate family has suffered in recent years. Panettiere's younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in February 2023 at just 28.
His death was attributed to heart complications. Just three weeks before her death, Panettiere shared what would become her final Instagram post. The black-and-white photograph showed the actress with her hands resting on photographer Randall Slavin's shoulder as he wrapped an arm around her. She captioned the image simply, “Good times and good friends.”
Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, whom she welcomed in 2014 with her former fiancé, heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. In 2018, Panettiere surrendered full custody of Kaya to Klitschko to focus on recovering from severe postpartum depression, alcoholism, and opioid addiction.
From a scene-stealing child performance in Remember the Titans to her breakout role on Heroes and acclaimed run on Nashville, Panettiere built a career that spanned more than three decades. She was just days away from her 37th birthday.
