Defense attorney Ed Chernoff has begun opening statements in Dr. Conrad Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial on Tuesday.

Chernoff's basis in Murray's defense is that Jackson administered drugs to himself without Murray's knowledge. Chernoff said:

“During the 10 hours on June 25, 2009 ... he did an act without his doctor’s knowledge, without his doctor’s permission, against his orders –- he did an act that caused his own death.

Michael Jackson swallowed eight 2 mg Lorazepam pills. ... He did this when Dr. Murray was not around. ... Michael Jackson self-administered a dose of Propofol ... that created a perfect storm in his body that killed him instantly."

-Chernoff said Murray is "no celebrity doctor ... he doesn't have an office in Beverly Hills. ... He literally saves lives. He takes care of only people who have had a heart attack or are about to."

-Chernoff says Murray provided Jackson Propofol for two months for Jackson for sleep, then Murray began a process to wean Jackson off of Propofol.

CONRAD MURRAY TRIAL: Jackson Family Arrives In Court

Posted on Tue Sep 27th, 2011 10:45am PDT       By X17 Staff

The Jackson family arrived at the L.A. County Courthouse Monday morning for the manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's private physician who is accused of giving the King of Pop a lethal dose of propofol.

Jackson's mother Katherine, father Joe, and siblings Jermaine, Janet, Randy, Tito and LaToya were all in downtown LA to witness opening statements. Janet was not originally expected to attend this morning, but she arrived holding hands with her brother Randy.

The family largely stayed calm and quiet while walking into court. The big theme of the day from both the Jackson family and fans was justice, a word used while talking to the media and screamed from the sidewalk.

There were supporters for Jackson, and more surprisingly for Murray as well, lined up outside the courthouse. Signs from the King of Pop's fans ranged from "Justice is overdue for Michael. Can you feel it?" to "Doctors are supposed to heal not kill." Murray's proponents also held up posters defending the doctor, including "I support Dr. Conrad Murray an innocent man who must be exonerated."

While some fans peacefully sang, one confused Jackson supporter went as far as wearing a shirt with Murray's face and that read "Dr. Murder." He then began drinking what appeared to be Propofol, yelling, "If you do it right, it's fine."

CONRAD MURRAY TRIAL: Prosecutor Claims Dr. Murray Lied About Propofol

Posted on Tue Sep 27th, 2011 10:16am PDT       By X17 Staff

Prosecutor David Walgren is giving his opening arguments in the Dr. Conrad Murray manslaughter trial for the death of Michael Jackson. Here are the highlights:

  • Cause of death was overdose of Propofol administered by Dr. Murray

  • Prosecution will prove Dr. Murray acted with gross negligence

  • Murray was paid $150,000/month as Michael Jackson's personal doctor

  • Murray procured large amounts of Propofol on a regular basis, on behalf of Jackson, but lied to a pharmacist, claiming he had a clinic in Santa Monica

  • Murray was aware of Jackson's poor state of health due to repeated injections, evidenced by a voice recording on his cell phone

  • "This Is It" tour choreographer will testify Jackson was sick, shivering and incoherent during the weeks before he died, but Murray continued to administer Propofol

  • Paramedics pronounced Jackson dead in his home the night of May 20, 2009 at 1 a.m.

  • Murray instructed bodyguard Alberto Alvarez to hide evidence of Jackson's last Propofol injection

  • Murray never told EMTs he administered Propofol to Jackson

  • UCLA doctors asked Murray what drugs he had administered and he never mentioned Propofol

Opening statements from the prosecution in Conrad Murray’s manslaughter trial included much of Conrad Murray’s own words – quoting him and playing audio from his June 27, 2009 interview. Prosecutor Walgren said:

  • “The evidence will reveal … Conrad Murray decided to give Propofol. … What Conrad Murray indicates is that what he have was just 25 mg of Propofol indicated with Lidocaine. … The evidence will reveal that much more than 25 mg was given.”

  • Audio was played from the interview, including when Murray said that he monitored Jackson, then had to go to the bathroom. When he returned after being gone “about two minutes,” Murray said, he was “stunned in the sense that he [Jackson] wasn’t breathing.”

  • The prosecution points out that Murray started making phone calls after he had given Jackson the Propofol that day, then sent e-mails – saying this was neglect and Murray should have been monitoring Jackson’s health.

  • Murray says in his interview that he didn’t call police for help because “to speak to a 911 operator would be to neglect him [Jackson].”

  • Murray says he didn’t ask Michael Amir Williams to call 911 because “he would want to know what it was about.”

Gay L Word Actress Kicked Off Southwest Flight For Kissing Partner

Posted on Tue Sep 27th, 2011 8:35am PDT       By X17 Staff

LeishaHaileyYouTubeGrab230.jpgLeisha Hailey of Showtime's The L Word doesn't just play a gay character -- she's also openly gay in real life, and Hailey says Southwest Airlines has a problem with that.

Hailey Tweeted on Monday about an experience when she and her girlfriend were apparently escorted off a Southwest flight for kissing each other. She said:

"I have been discriminated against by @SouthwestAir. Flt. attendant said that it was a 'family' airline and kissing was not ok. ... Hate is not a family value. ... We were escorted off the plane for getting upset ... Since when is showing affection towards someone you love illegal? I want to know what Southwest Airlines considers as 'family'."

Hailey says she has much of the incident recorded on video, though she has not yet released any recordings. She is demanding a public apology and a refund from the airline, and calling for gay couples to boycott.

Southwest released a statement, saying:

" ... reports indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive ... The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight."
